Meet Günther and Düsel in their stable. Then lead them yourselves, with us by your side, across the old sheep pastures of Kirnberg and up the slopes of the Frankenhöhe hills, where the evening sun lingers a little longer.
A donkey is never in a hurry. It stops when something catches its interest, sniffs at the wayside and thinks before it moves on. Walk next to one for a while and you notice your own head getting quieter.
About three kilometres an hourThe donkeys set the pace. That is the whole point.
Always guided, always privateMax. six guests. It is just you and your people, and we walk with you.
Two donkeys who are never separatedGünther and Düsel live, eat and walk together.
Our walks
How much donkey time would you like?
Three options, all private and guided. Each begins in the stable with a proper introduction, and we are with you all the way.
Stable time
Arrive and get acquainted: we show you how donkeys think. You groom Günther and Düsel, clean their hooves and lead them on a first lap around the yard. Lovely for little ones, and in any weather.
After stable time, a loop around the village: to the church, the site of the vanished moated castle, the Wildenhof and the old stone cross on the road to Gebsattel. Short, quiet and full of stories.
The long loop for those who really want to arrive: up the Wolfsberg and across the old sheep pastures, now a nature reserve, with an unhurried rest along the way. In April and May the spring gentian blooms here, and between the junipers the view stretches far across the Rothenburg countryside.
approx. 4 hours in total, incl. stable time and a rest stop
Prices are for the whole group with both donkeys, max. six people. Children under 4 go free. No booking fees, no hidden costs. Dates by arrangement, on weekdays and weekends. Children aged 4 to 12 pay €10, under 4 they go free.
Anything is possible
Your idea, our donkeys.
A treasure hunt full of riddles, a birthday party with long ears, a proposal with a view, a picnic by the spring, golden hour over the Frankenhöhe, a stag or hen party with a difference, a team time out without slides, or even a donkey sponsorship: tell us what you dream of. Günther and Düsel are up for almost anything.

Set off together
You lead, we walk with you. At donkey pace over sheep pastures and field paths, with breaks, stories and plenty of time to look around.
Stay in Rothenburg
Sleep inside the medieval walls.
Frankenesel is run by the family-owned Romantik Hotel Markusturm in Rothenburg’s old town. The Berger family welcomes travellers there in the fourth and fifth generation, in a building whose origins go back to the 13th century. Every year a pair of storks nests on the tower. The donkeys are a little jealous.
No. Every walk starts with a proper introduction in the stable, and we are with you the whole time.
Which languages do you guide in?
English, German and Italian. Günther and Düsel only understand one word anyway, in every language: carrot. Möhre. Carota. Carotte. ニンジン. 胡萝卜.
Can we ride the donkeys?
No. Frankenesel is a walking experience. Our donkeys are led on foot and carry light luggage at most.
How old do children need to be?
Children from about four can lead a donkey together with an adult. There is no minimum age for stable time. Children aged 4 to 12 pay €10, under 4 they go free.
How many people can come?
Up to six guests per walk. The price is for the whole group, with both donkeys.
Where does the walk start?
At the stable in Kirnberg, municipality of Gebsattel, five kilometres south-east of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Kirnberg is easy to reach by car or bike. You will receive the exact address and parking information with your confirmation.
Can we walk with the donkeys all the way to Rothenburg?
Unfortunately not. Rothenburg is about five kilometres away. There and back would take many hours at donkey pace, with roads, cobblestones and crowds. Better to combine your walk with a stroll through the old town on the same day.
What happens in bad weather?
Light rain is part of being outdoors. In case of thunderstorms, storms or great heat we cancel for the sake of people and animals and find a new date together. Stable time works in almost any weather.
What should we wear and bring?
Sturdy shoes, long trousers (because of ticks and grass), a rain jacket depending on the weather and something to drink. Small backpacks are enough.
Can we bring our dog?
Unfortunately not. Donkeys are often uneasy around unfamiliar dogs, and we want everyone to feel relaxed.
How do we pay?
You will receive all payment details with the confirmation of your date. Gift vouchers are sent once payment has been received.
How can we rebook or cancel?
Free of charge up to 48 hours before your date. If we cancel due to the weather, you get a new date or your money back.
